the gentle art of soft landings (podcast)

I have podcast the piece below “the gentle art of soft landings’ below this linkage.
I did it in one take with no rehearsal because I wanted to practice live work which I feel kind of fits with the idea of improvisation.
Now I will have to ask Joseph Tawadros for his permission to use the music as a background for the performance. But only if I don’t write a better one for it in the meantime.
Podcast for Pool
April 28, 2010 at 6:43 pm | Posted in australian poetry, performance, podcast, poetry, writing | 10 CommentsTags: podcast, poetry
I have been enjoying myself at Pool which is a project coordinated by the ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster. They have requested pieces about birds and rivers, so I thought I would podcast a couple of poems, sunonheads exit and The Scrub Turkey. You can hear them at Pool under the link above or here at my podcast site.
It was good practice for my featured performance at Speed Poets this Sunday where I will be doing twelve minutes from memory. Wish me luck!

He holds his mittened hands over the burning drum. Sense of place as a function of uniqueness of voice, do I have an accent? I like it when they stumble down this dead end looking for Australian sentences and as any strangler of the lungsandwitch language will tell you a big part of the train ride is looking for creating discovering A VOICE! he yells into the darkness of the alley scattering the rats then whispers quoting Squires, the only thing spellcheckers and grammar machines ever spelled was the death of style.
‘I have known dogs with more style than most humans,’ says the ghost of Bukowhiskey to him. Yeah well, you and Rimbaud, they might love your pottery but they ain’t gonna invite you in for dinner and meet the children are they, hitching his trousers and spitting into the dying fire.
My fellow bums, he addresses the empty alley, it is the very fact that we offend their sense of propriety that justifies our existence. Whilst the hypocrite boojwah will always accept one or two of us into their sanitised galleries to proove their cool, we must never forget that it is their noses which decide their morality. Nothing marks you as a lesser being more than the stench of life. I’m cold, throw another piano on that fire.

Two new podcasts, ‘spray‘ and ‘undulations in solar plexus‘
Hope you enjoy them. They are only short, less than a minute each.
Have a fantabulous day full of tiny miracles like unexpected flowers blooming,

Listen. (podcast)

“Listen” will always be one of the centrepieces of my writing but it is incredibly difficult to record well because it is about the relationship between sound, meaning and the mystical. But Mary P. was the first to make a request so here is another attempt at it. There will probably be many more and I am resigned to never getting a recording of it that I think is close to finished.
(Oh and Listen is in The Puzzle Box and so on but I am getting embarrassed about advertising it all the time, sorry and just for my notes I put a different more mellow less performancey version of Listen in the podcast site here.)

This is a short 1 min 2 sec reading from The Puzzle Box.
If this player has trouble playing you can listen to the podcast here.
(If you have a request for a specific piece to be read from The Puzzle Box or from anywhere, even other people’s work, feel free to leave it in the comment box. I need a bit of a break from writing and now I have figured out how to post mp3’s in here I will be doing readings for a while. Hopefully it will help me get over my embarrassment before the world tour, haha,)
